Preparing for your Shoot: What you Need to Know

You can help make for a smooth shoot by planning ahead of time. Preparation is the key to success. Here are some tips that can help you prepare for that all-important day. Make the best use of your day as it may be the one and only day to shoot.

BEFORE THE SHOOT

Hit the Gym: Hard.
You have just been selected to do a photoshoot that could potentially change your life and your career. Do like the pros do, and prep for it: diet, and hit the gym. Don't pass up what is an amazing opportunity to launch your career. I mean a good face is half the battle; make sure you have a body to match.

Tanning
Make sure you are tan for your photo shoot. White skin reflects light and is unappealing for most photo work. If you are shooting any swimsuit, underwear, or athletic shots, small tanlines are preferred or better yet, the overall tan.

Body Hair: Trim or Shave?
If you have more than average body hair, it's suggested you trim. Check with the photographer before shaving arms and legs. If you have never shaved your body before, experiment at least one week prior to the shoot to determine how your body will react. As a rule, only bodybuilders should shave smooth.

Hair cuts
Make sure you get your haircut as close to the shoot as possible. There's one exception: that's if you use a stylist that you are not familiar with. In that case cut it at least a week ahead of time.

Check Weather Conditions
Remember that Perez shoots primarily outdoors and his shoots are contingent on good weather. Make sure you confirm weather conditions before arriving in Los Angeles.

WHAT TO BRING

Hair Care Products
Make sure you bring your customary shampoos, brushes, combs and gels. Hair stylists are rarely provided.

Identification
You'll need two forms of government issued identification. Make it easy and come prepared with photocopies. Magazines require this for publication.

Clothing
Discuss clothing needs with the photographer. Generally you will want to bring activewear, swimwear, and casual clothes, unless it's a fashion shoot. Don't forget a good selection of shorts, underwear and socks. A selection of shoes including sneakers is also suggested. Bring sandals if it's a beach shoot. Bring sunglasses, necklaces, and other accessories for variety.

Food
If you take supplements, bring them. If you're on a special diet, let us know.

DAY BEFORE THE SHOOT

Make sure you get lots of rest the day before a shoot. In some cases you'll be working all day and will need the energy.

DAY OF THE SHOOT

If you're shoot is an all day shoot, make sure to pack a bag. That bag should consist of: Water, snacks, workout gear, hair products, clothes, and anything else you need such as vitamins or supplements. If you use make-up, bring it; however make-up will be provided the day of the shoot.

Be prepared to sign a model release. See testing guidelines for details.
